Half Blind/Beef Church - Klub Kommotion, San Francisco 4-30-88

Both of these bands were from the the San Francisco bay area. There;s no info on the internet about these bands but Half Blind did have two songs released on comp. tapes in 1986. I can't find any releases for Beef Church so this live tape might be all there is. Does anyone have any info on either of these bands? Both sets were recorded from the audience and are from the master tape.

Gramma Hash Brown/Wankers - D.A. Ward Studios, Los Angeles 10-25-86

Here's a third show from Gramma Hash playing all his favorites. I posted this Wankers show before about 5 years ago but here it is again. The Wankers were a Los Angeles band that sound like a Post-Punk Velvet Underground. There seems to be no info on them on the internet so don't know if they ever released any records. Both shows are recorded from the audience and are from the master tape.

Gramma Hash Brown/Creeps - Unitarian Church, Anaheim CA 8-30-86

The standout track here is the Gramma Hash Brown song L.A.P.D. Everyone sings along and makes it a fun listen. There are a few bands out there named The Creeps but I don't know anything about this Creeps. The music is guitar/bass/drums/keyboards Garage Punk and all songs are instrumental. It doesn't seem they released any records. Anyone got any info? Audience recordings. Both sets are from the master tape.

Gramma Hash Brown/SP.61 - Stardust Studios, Los Angeles 4-27-86

Gramma Hash Brown was a political Punk Folkie who played around Los Angeles in the mid-1980s. I don't think he ever released any records. SP.61 play minimal experimental soundscapes. some of their members were apparently also member of Postwar who I posted a live show of on this blog before. They don't seem to have released anything and I have no other info on them Both sets were recorded from the audience and are from the master tape.

My Youtube Channel

For anyone that is interested I have a Youtube channel for many years. For the last few posts I have made some very nice Youtube videos for the shows I have posted on my blog. Seems soon as I make a post here someone takes it and makes it into a Youtube video with no link back to my blog or any credit so I thought I might as well make videos if that's what people want. Most of my videos feature a photo of the band or artist along with the song titles as the video plays. Have a look and spread the word. I might feature stuff there that I don't put on the blog.

Dead Kennedys/Germs/Bags - Masque, Los Angeles 12-31-78

This is the third time I've posted this Bags set and the second time I've posted this Dead Kennedys set. Nothing new on the Bags set but this tape for Dead Kennedys has the encore which the other tape did not, although Rawhide cuts off and is only a small fraction of the song. I've never seen this set of The Germs around before. It has all the songs we know and love with the addition of a live version of Round And Round. I think I used to have a photocopy of the flyer for this show in the 1980s but lost it long ago. Does anyone have it? All sets were recorded from the audience and sound quality is good.

Bags - Masque, Los Angeles 1978

Here's a Bags show I don't think has been in circulation before. The tape cover says it was recorded 10-77 but since most of these songs were written by Craig Lee and he only joined the band in January 1978, this show is probably from early 1978. Also, before the first song someone (probably Craig Lee) says, "ready Terry?" which could mean Terry Graham was the drummer and he only joined the band in March 1978. The setlist is also the same early songs they played on the Live At The Masque comp. CD and the live at the Troubadour video in February 1978 with the addition of the new great song Poseur. This was recorded from the audience and sound quality is good. Alive introduces track 7 but I cannot understand what she says for the song title.

U.X.A./391/Vidiots - Blackies, Los Angeles 12-29-79

The Vidiots are most well known for having one song on the V.A. Rodney On The ROQ volume 1 LP which happened to be the only song they were able to release during their existence. The band started in 1978 as the Audio Vidiots and only played their first show during the summer of 1979. The line up was never stable but the Vidiots did enter the studio and recorded several demos in 1979 and 1980. By the end of 1980 the band was done. Since 2006 there is a cd-r in circulation of some of their recordings. 391 consisted of Jeff Olener, former singer for The Nuns, plus three members of the band Seizure who released one single in 1978. The band formed during the summer 1979 and played regularly around Los Angeles. In 1981 their only release, a 4-song 12inch ep, was released on Posh Boy Records. U.X.A. formed in 1977 in San Francisco and were together on and off until the late 1990s with singer De De Troit being the only constant member. In 1979 the band had three songs on the Tooth And Nail comp. LP followed by a full LP in 1980 that was released on Posh Boy Records in Los Angeles. It seems this night at Blackies was a Posh Boy Records night with all three bands being on that label. I don't think the Vidiots or 391 shows are complete as the first songs on their tapes cut in. All sets are recorded from the audience and sound quality is good. (Even though the 391 tape says Nuns it's actually 391.)

Gotta Keep Movin'

I hope everyone is surviving the covid-19 pandemic okay. The summer heat isn't doing me any kindnesses and even though I have all kinds of time on my hands I haven't felt like doing much because of the temperatures. And, while I haven't posted anything here in a little while I haven't given up but I have been digitizing some stuff for a friends blog. His blog is Freedom Has No Bounds and is dedicated to posting video and audio of bands from Philadelphia and Southeastern Pennsylvania, as well as, national and international bands that have played in the Philadelphia area over the years. So go over there and grab some stuff.

http://freedomhasnobounds.com/

On a similar note, I became a tape trader in 1982/3 and traded all the way up to the late 1990s when everything went digital with CD-Rs. That's when the tapes went into boxes and stacked in the closet. I started digitizing some tapes about 20 years ago but it was an overwhelming task because I had so many. Plus, I was also busy with other things. When it came time to move to a new residence in 2014 I decided I didn't want the tapes anymore and no one I knew was really interested in them, either. But I heard that a tape trader friend I had in the 1980s had donated her tapes to the Maximum Rock 'n' Roll tape archive. I thought that was a good idea so I also contacted MRR and asked if they wanted my tapes. They did and they said they would digitize them, which I thought was also great. In 2014/2015 I sent them most of the hardcore part of my collection. Over the years I surfed the net looking to see if any of those tapes had been digitized and posted on websites or blogs. But, I never found anything until about 1.5 years ago. Some things started showing up on two blogs run by the same guy. Escape Is Terminal and Terminal Escape are those two blogs.

http://escapeisterminal.blogspot.com/2019/04/
https://terminalescape.blogspot.com/

Most of the posts on Escape Is Terminal from April 2019 to the present are from tapes that were apart of my collection. And, on Terminal Escape, which is only for demo tapes, the War Of Destruction, Abeyance, Syphilitics, Just A Product, Johnny Rotten, Sham 69/Jimmy Pursey, v.a. This Tape Sucks, Youth Brigade (DC), Murder Burger, Self Abuse, and a few others are from my old tapes. So you can see what my tape collection looked like in the 1980s. Of course both blogs have a lot of great stuff posted so you should go over there and fill your harddrive with lots of great stuff.
All my posts for Australia and New Zealand are finished and I had been planning to post stuff from Europe next followed by a lot of stuff from England. However, almost a year ago I got in a small collection of tapes of mostly Punk stuff from California covering the years 1976 to about 1980 and a few things from the early 1980s including some uncirculated live recordings and a few demos by known and unknown bands. So, the next posts are gonna be all that California stuff. I also have California stuff from two other tape collections plus Cali stuff from another collection. I think the rest of the year is gonna be all California.

And finally, on September 13th it will be 10 years since I started blogging. I really started this blog because at the time I had a class where I had to learn how to make a blog and use html. The content I had to post on my class blog was all class related and boring so I thought I could learn blogging better if I made a blog posting stuff that interested me. Ten years on and it has worked out very well and digitizing tapes has become a little time consuming hobby. Some days I wonder if I should keep going for another ten years or move on to other things. I have access to thousands of tapes and could easily keep going for a long long time.

Let's see where things go.

Toy Love - Captain Cook Tavern, Dunedin NZ 8-23-80

Toy Love were from Dunedin New Zealand and seem the be the biggest and most successful of the New Zealand Punk bands. Three members were previously in the Punk band The Enemy which started in 1977 and played their last show at the end of 1978. The Enemy went into recording studios several time but split up without releasing anything. The three members of The Enemy were joined by two former members of the band The Basketcases to form Toy Love. Toy Love released one album and three single, all of which made it into the New Zealand charts. This live recording was recorded at about the time the album was released and it features many Enemy songs besides newer compositions. This is a soundboard recording and the quality is excellent.

Birthday Party - Posthoornkerk, Amsterdam 11-08-81

The Boys Next Door moved to London in February 1980 and on arrival changed the name of the band to The Birthday Party. The first year in London was a slow and difficult one but in 1981 they started touring again, around the UK, fist trip to the USA and at the end of the year they toured around Europe. This show was one show on that tour. It was recorded by VPRO and broadcast on the radio. Soundquality is very good. Unfortunatley, my tape seems to be missing the first three songs, "Nick The Stripper" + "The Dead Songs" + "She's Hit". Those first two songs from this show can be found on the Cremation bootleg LP. Boys Next Door - Swinburne College, Melbourne 8-19-77

Boys Next Door were from Melbourne Australia and started off in 1976. Initially the band started as a four piece and were playing mostly cover songs with just a few originals in the classic 1977 style. In 1978 they released their first single with a cover of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made For Walking" on the a-side and an original on the b-side with an additional song being released on the Lethal Weapon comp. LP. In late 1978 the band added an additional guitarist and the sound change. They released two LPs and a few more singles before changing their name the The Birthday Party. This recording is one of their earliest shows and it was recorded by 3SW student radio. Sound quality is very good. [from cassette tape]

Scientists - Tivoli, Adelaide 8-07-83

The Scientists started out by releasing the now classic single Frantic Romantic in 1979 which was perhaps on the Powerpop/Buzzcocks side Punk, but still great. By the time of this recording they had released two LPs and several singles and the sound had moved a bit more towards a Post Punk sound. Still great of course. This recording is a soundboard recording and the sound quality is excellent.

Lipstick Killers - Royal Antler, Sydney Australia 10-03-80

Lipstick Killers were formed by Mark and David Taylor in 1978 after their previous band Psycho Surgeons split up. They released their lone single in 1979 which was produced by Radio Birdman guitarist Deniz Tek. The band split up in 1982 but the single has since become a classic and a few posthumous releases of old recordings have seen the light. This recording finds them in prime condition and it is quite a shame they never got to release a proper album. This is an audience recording. The vocals are a bit low in the mix but it's still a good recording. Can anyone help with the unknown song titles?

Radio Birdman - JJJ Studios, Sydney 11-23-76

This legendary band needs no introduction. Here they are recorded live playing on Triple J radio station playing most of what would become their first album. There's also enough cover songs, of 1960s American Garage classics + one for the Heavy Metalers, to help bring in listeners who might not have known who they were at the time. The Riptides were a Garage Punk Power Pop Surf band that started out in 1978 as The Numbers and released the classic KBD 7inch ep Sunset Strip. To avoid confusion with another Australian band with the same name they changed their band name to The Riptides. The band lasted until 1993 and along the way they released four singles, a 12inch ep and an LP. This live show was recorded through the soundboard and sound quality is excellent.

News - Bernhearts, Melbourne Australia 1979

The News started out as The Babeez and released one classic KBD Punk single in 1977 with Dowanna Love. In 1978 the band changed their name to The News released a further three 7inches. This must be an early show and I do question the year on this since they are only playing two songs from the Babeez single and nothing from the 1978 News single. The Tom Jones cover is interesting but the hit song for me is Nasty Nazi. I don't think most of the other songs have been officially released. It's an audience recording and sound quality is good.

Johnnys - Tote Hotel, Melbourne Australia 1983

The Johnnys were a Psychobilly/Garage Rock/American Wild West style band. Their most famous member was the late Spencer P. Jones who later went on to play with Beasts Of Bourbon. The Johnnys started in early 1983 and before they had their first record out were the opening band for Iggy Pop's Australian tour that year. They were quite popular in Australia and New Zealand, releasing two studio albums and many singles before splitting up about 1991. This live show is an audience recording and the sound quality is good.

Hard Ons - Demos 1985

The Hard Ons are a Punk Pop band that released their first record in 1985 and still seem to be at it in 2020. Two of the songs on this demo were released on a 7inch single in 1986. The versions here seem to be different than the ones on the record. It's unclear if the three version on this demo were ever officially released. Can anyone fill in the unknown song title? Sound quality is excellent.

Celibate Rifles - Fricke Sessions, French's Forest, Sydney 8-23-83

This one is a rehearsal tape recorded in the bands practice room in the Sydney suburb of French's Forest. I'm not sure why it is called the Fricke Sessions but it might have something to do with the Rolling Stone magazine writer David Fricke. The line up on this recording is Damien Lovelock - Vocals, David Morris - Guitar, James Darroch - Bass, Kent Steedman - Guitar, Phillip Jacquet - Drums. Sound quality is good.

Celibate Rifles - VPRO, Amsterdam 9-02-87

Celibate Rifles were from Sydney and might be one of the better known Punk bands from Australia. They started in 1979 and finished in 2019 when singer Damian Lovelock died. Over 40 years they released 14 albums and numerous singles. They also toured throughout Australia Europe and North American. Quite a good run. This recording is from Dutch radio. Sound quality is very good. Unfortunately, my tape is apparently missing the first four songs.

New Christs - Sydney Australia 1983

New Christs were from Sydney Australia and were started by former Radio Birdman singer Rob Younger in 1980 and released their first single in early 1981. Younger continued the band with a completely different line up after the single. On these recordings Rob Younger sings, Chris Masuak (also from Radio Birdman and later in The HItmen) and Kent Steedman (from Celebate Rifles) both on guitar, Tony Robertson (previously in the Punk band The 31st and later in The Hitmen) on  bass, Mark Kingsmill (also in The Hitmen and The Hoodoo Gurus) on drums, with Ron Peno (also from The 31st) singing harmonies. This line up recorded two single. These recordings are both audience tapes and the sound quality is good. At the Tivoli show the band were supposed to be the opening band for Iggy Pop but Iggy called in sick that night. The tape didn't come with a complete date but it could be July 1 or July 3.

Keep On Moving

Okay, it's time to get moving with some new posts. Sorry for the long delay between posts but now with having all the time in the world to blog because of isolating due to coronavirus I should be able to get something done.

I'm not quite finished with the Japanese posts. The Boredoms in London tape is buried in a box somewhere and I haven't come across it yet and the Ruins show in Turkey needs some extra special attention which might include connecting my stereo up in a different way to get the desired results. I'll work on those over time and hopefully get everything all worked out.

In the meantime I'm gonna continue forward.

A few months ago I got in a great collection of tapes that has some uncirculated rarities in it. I thought I might do those now but I think I'm gonna do what I originally planned and post stuff from Australia and New Zealand because I have only a small number of shows from that region. After that I'll start posting stuff from the new collection.
