Mau Maus (USA) - Live 1983

In Los Angeles in 1976-1978 there was a band named Berlin Brats who made an appearance in the film Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke as one of the bands in the battle of the bands segment towards the end of the film. The Berlin Brats recorded a single which made it to the test pressing stage but was never officially released, apparently. However, one song from the single made in onto the Saturday Night Pogo compilation LP that was released in1978. In that same year the band changed their name to The Mau Maus and played around California until the mid 1980s. They made some recordings but only two songs were released on the Hell Comes To Your House volume 2 compilation album in 1983. They also had two songs on a Target Video release in the 1980s. Here are two short live shows. The T-Bird show was recorded from the soundboard and has very good sound quality. The Reseda show is an audience recording and has good sound quality. Psychotic is the song from the Up In Smoke film and Laugh Track was on the Target Video. The others were unreleased.

Jimmy Norton's Explosion - John Peel Session 7-30-79

Today's post is another officially unreleased Peel session. This time from a sort of Punk Rock supergroup. The band featured Glen Matlock (Bass, Lead Vocals) fresh out of the Rich Kids and formerly of The Sex Pistols, Danny Kustow (Guitar, Backing Vocals) from Tom Robinson Band and Budgie (Drums) from Siouxsie & The Banshees and formerly of Spitfire Boys and Slits. Of these four songs Ambition and Just Like Lazarus were recorded by The Rich Kids in 1978 but remained unreleased until 1998 when they were released on the Burning Sounds CD, Ambition was also recorded by Iggy Pop when Glen played with him. This band changed their name in 1980 to Spectres and released two single, the first one featured a weaker version of Getting Away With Murder. Lost In A Landslide remains unreleased in any version. This is from a recent radio broadcast and the sound quality is excellent.

01. BBC Documentary

Steve Diggle - Demos 1-27-81

Here are some demo songs recorded by Steve Diggle in his home studio one month before the Buzzcocks split up in 1981. These songs feature guitar, drum machine and some vocals. None of the songs are finished and only the songs Drift Away and In The Back were ever re-recorded (with a line up of Diggle/Garvey/Maher) and released (on a Flag Of Convenience album). These recordings provide insight into the songwriting process and also gets one wondering what a fourth Buzzcocks album might have sounded like in 1981 had they continued at that time.

Quads - The Collection 1979-1980

The Quads were a  Mod/Power Pop band from Birmingham England that released 3 singles in the years 1979-1980. In 1979 they recorded a session for John Peel and in 1980 they also had two songs on the Brum Beat Live at the Barrel Organ compilation LP. Here's a nice collection of most of their output. I'm missing the b-side to the second single and the compilation tracks. Does anyone have those? Very good sound quality.

Zeros - John Peel Session 11-30-77

I posted this session on the old blog two years ago but that version was missing the song Solid State. Recently, the complete session started making the rounds. The Zeros were a great band it is a shame they never released more than a single and split single. A full album by them released in 1977-1978 would now be a classic of the era. Seems the band have been playing around the last few years with the original members. They have a Myspace page with additional old songs, including a demo version of Radio Fun, and some new ones plus info and photos. Radio broadcast. Very good sound.

Dogmatics - WERS, Boston 4-07-84 + 4-21-85

The Dogmatics were Boston's unsung heroes who existed from 1981 to 1986 in a time when Punk and underground music was basically dominated by hardcore. They went right on doing what they were doing and released two albums and a couple singles. Sadly, they came to an end when one of their members died in a motorcycle accident. Both these shows are radio broadcasts and the quality is very good.

Platzangst - Krawall 2000, Hamburg 8-06-84

Platzangst were my favorite German band in the early 1980s. They existed from 1979 until 1985. In 1983 they had two songs on the Waterkant Hits compilation LP of bands from Hamburg Germany and this was their only official vinyl release. They recorded a demo in 1984 and also had songs on several compilation tapes. In 1985 they changed their name to Public Enemy 23 and released a 6 song 12" ep before splitting up in 1986. This live show was recorded from the audience and the sound quality is good.

Wayne Kramer's Air-Raid - NYC + Milwaukee 1982

You should know Wayne Kramer as one of the masterminds behind Detroit's legendary MC5. You also might know that in 1980 he was in a band called Gang War with Johnny Thunders. After that band split he formed Air-Raid. They wrote some original songs and played a handful of MC5 classics mixed with a few other covers. The original songs sound like MC5 gone Power Pop. These are both audience recordings with good sound quality. The Milwaukee show is not complete but it's all I got.

Vitamin - Demo + Live 1981

Vitamin were from Boston and were around from 1980 to 1983. While Boston in that time period is now legendary for straight-edge hardcore, Vitamin were from the other side of town. They have been described as Aggro - Avant Garde Rock. Their quirky sound includes elements of Rock, Pop, Punk and No-Wave. Their only official release was one song on the A Wicked Good Time volume 2 compilation LP in 1981. In 1982 there were some line-up changes as well as a move to a harder and faster style. In the early 1990s guitarist/singer Jason Shapiro was a member of the Los Angeles band Celebrity Skin with former Germs drummer Don Bolles and is currently playing guitar in Red Kross. The sound quality on the demo is excellent. The Underground show is a soundboard recording and has very good sound quality. The Rat show was recorded from the audience and has good sound quality. Permission to upload these recordings has been granted by the surviving band members.
